Demodex mites and rosacea: what the tiny face mite has to do with flares
Almost everyone carries the mite. In rosacea it shows up in force, and that changes treatment.

Almost everyone carries Demodex, microscopic mites that live in the hair follicles and oil glands of the face. They are usually harmless passengers. In rosacea, though, they show up in unusually high numbers, and that observation has reshaped how dermatologists think about the inflammatory, bumps-and-pustules form of the condition.
The link is a correlation with a plausible mechanism, not a simple story of infestation. People with rosacea tend to have higher Demodex densities, and the mites and the bacteria they carry may help drive the inflammation that produces papules and pustules. Whether the mites cause the flare or simply thrive in already inflamed skin is still debated, but the density finding is consistent enough to matter clinically. This is why an anti-mite treatment can help. You cannot feel or see Demodex, and testing densities is not part of routine care, so the practical takeaway is not to hunt for mites. It is to recognize that scrubbing harder or reaching for harsh antibacterials is the wrong instinct. Gentle cleansing and a barrier-friendly routine, paired with a prescription that happens to reduce mite counts, does more than any at-home mite remedy.
Be skeptical of products marketed as demodex cleanses or tea tree cures. Tea tree oil does have activity against the mites, but at the concentrations that work it is often irritating to rosacea-prone skin, which can leave you redder for no net gain. The evidence-backed route runs through a dermatologist, not the supplement aisle.
